CBZ Holdings Limited's flagship subsidiary, CBZ Bank, was established in 1980 as the Bank of Credit and Commerce Zimbabwe Limited. Following the collapse of its parent company, the bank was nationalised by the Zimbabwean government in 1991 and rebranded as the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe Limited. It was fully privatised in 1998 through a listing on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange. In 2005 the group restructured under CBZ Holdings Limited as the listed parent entity, with CBZ Bank as its core subsidiary. The group subsequently expanded through acquisitions such as Beverly Building Society (2007) and new ventures including Optimal Insurance (2006) and Red Sphere Finance microfinance services (2019), growing into a diversified financial services conglomerate with roughly 1,200 employees.
