RioZim was incorporated on 29 August 1956 as Rio Tinto Southern Rhodesia Limited, established to develop the Empress Nickel deposit in Zimbabwe's Midlands and the first mining operation set up outside Europe by Rio Tinto plc. The company separated from parent Rio Tinto plc in 2004, becoming a wholly Zimbabwean entity, RioZim Limited, listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange under ticker RIOZ.
